Before we get into how to administer eye ointment, let's first talk about how to apply eye drops in general. Begin by tilting your head back while standing, sitting, or lying down (whichever is most comfortable for you). Use your index finger of the hand not holding the eye drop bottle and gently pull down on the skin of the lower eyelid. Look up, and apply one drop to the small pocket you've made. Close your eyes and let the drop absorb before repeating on the other side.
Applying eye drops is a bit easier than ointment, so let's dive into that next. Eye ointment will come in a very small tube, and you'll want to hold that tube in your dominant hand. Using the same technique as above, make a small pocket in your lower eyelid by pulling your eyelid down with your opposite hand. For ointments, it is easiest to look in a mirror as you squeeze the tube and apply a small strip (usually 1/16") into the pocket you've made. Close your eyes, moving your eyes around to disperse the ointment across your eye. Then, repeat on the other side if needed! Do take note that ointments will blur your vision for some time, so know that this is a very common side effect.
