Don't drink wood alcohol. 4 shots of the stuff will kill you, 2 will make you go blind. Methanol is the bad stuff, Ethanol is what we drink.

what he is making is a byproduct of a gas made from wood, and in a cooled temperature similar to room temperature, and the liquid you see is much less energy efficient to produce than using the gas itself. trading forms may be more convenient, but efficiency is way lower. this is not the answer to biofuel, i think because the gas can be pumped into an engine similar to lpg or propane, it would be much more efficient to run a generator on wood and utilized the electricity made from that.

Why not grow pine trees and tap the trees for the rosin and convert it to fuel? Then as trees get to point they dying or worth more as lumber sell as lumber? Also collect and sell the longleaf pinestraw

Methanol and ethanol can come from any biomatter. It can even be distilled from heat created from more biomatter.

We put our eggs in the wrong basket. Had we put our energies into methanol research and infrastructure instead of ethanol we may have seen more net progress. Not sure why we choose to back the harder chemical pathway.

the germans already did this in ww2 they had a shortage of gas and came up with the idea of using wood to make it but they could not make enough to drive their warmachine

How about Hydrogen? It's like 142 MJ/kg and Gasoline is like 46MJ/kg... also it's abundant and doesn't produce any dangerous gases :)

I wonder how many times you can use the catalyst before it is depleted? Once it is depleted is the byproduct safe for the environment or better yet can it be used for other products?

what he hopes it will lead to is george getting rich so he can say screw you tiny peasant people i own my private jet and limo which i run on good old pump gas because i could really give a rats ass about clean air or tree hanging bs. but i will where this lab coat for now and use a bunch of green code words like diversity, sustainable, biomass ,and carbon emissions to trick them sorry dumb ass morons in washington dc to let me waste a billion bucks every few years so i can write a super big fat paycheck off the top scamming millions of taxpayers dollars for me and some hookers and my coke dealer to party on and rub our junk on super rich super stupid kids whose daddys make billions in the industrial war complex so they can eat vegan and kiss dolphins and sea lions and make no bake cookies from dead tree bark all thanks to george here and his magic dust he is trying to make people think he made when he just ordered it from the internet from the grow your own pot store they use to filter out stuff in there hydro weed grow setups in mom's basement where he got the idea in the first place. we are just two or three more bong hits from independent energy. he is grinning and smiling all the time because he can not believe it was so easy to scam all the tree huggers out of millions of dollars in research money to build a hash oil cooker in the school energy lab and the dumb asses do not know the difference. in three years george is going to team up with wayne and garth as well as bill and ted and make a most excellent movie about the whole big adventure they started after they all got stoned the day ferris bueller skipped school kevin bacon will direct it with rodriguez productions.

Folks who are interested in this kind of technology might want to look into "woodgas".
Just look for it on YT, and you'll see people running cars and generators on wood.
No, it's not steam power, but explosive gas extracted from wood to run spark ignition engines.
I use it here on my little farm for all of my electric power production during winter.

What's really cool is that anyone with reasonable skills can build a Gasifier - and power an engine with it  :) .

Well it seems that the invention has not been commercialized. I think the use of the catalyst material can generate challenges with economics. Also separating gasoline (clean enough to feed an engine) from the condensable liquids after the reactor might not be a trivial issue either.

I believe what he is making is alcohol. I have a friend that turns all different kinds of plant materials into alcohol using yeast and fermentation, then distillation and condensation into alcohol and it tastes pretty dam good!

And it's always bound to something, so you use energy to break that 'stuff' down into H2 so you can make less energy then you used. Bad idea.
121 2 . Reply
Stephen Anderle . 2013-07-28
That's one way to get rid of the stuff! But as with anything , the second use for something always jacks up the price horrendously. $10.00 a gallon? Now you have to look for a third use for it to lower the price. Government subsidies for the farming of it?!

A good alcohol using engine and once it's run for a few minutes the exhaust heat generates enough heat to produce more alcohol from the wood. Just have a big enough 'tender' (wood trailer) to get you where you're going. Choo! Choo!

No that wouldn't be "gasoline" but something close like butanol most likely. Looks like it goes through a themogenic process. That at scale wouldn't be economically feasible. Best to use genetically modified yest or bacteria to do the work.

Great refinement towards fuel replacement. One may also heat the biomass more efficiently using automated Fresnel lens arrays or geothermal.

Rocket stoves are simple and require very little refining of fuel (cut into chunks that fit)... here and now! Pallets, sticks, chips are immediate cheap fuel. Space and thermal mass heating problem solved in many situations... baking and cooking as well. Ethanol and veg oil for diesels... been around well over 100 years. No need for patents, not that I'm against this...
