The concept of memorizing was relevant a decade ago. Now with access to knowledge at our fingertips, I don't understand the need 2 memorize

What? I was never forced to memorize it, not even in grad school. I had to know the trends and how to read it; the table’s always available.

I had a test where I had to fill in the periodic table. I failed

It was a stupid high school thing, I had to memorize element names, weights, symbols, and # of valence electrons

Ooh my class was told it would be graded on a curve. We had a kid with a photographic memory. Everyone else failed

That's foolish. You end up learning first 3 periods just as a byproduct of learning chemistry.

Even then, if you were in a situation where you needed it, you would most likely have a reference available.

And if for some reason that knowledge is no longer at your finger tips, having it memorized would be great. Slim chance I know.

BrickSniper33 . 2020-01-24 19:47:12
I memorized it partially because it’s good info to have, and quite handy for physics not to need the table. But it’s not really necessary.

What school made you memorise the table? Even in university they always gave us one for exams.

That's fucked up. When I took chem, the only element memorization was extra credit for singing Tom Lehrer's Element Song.

You should really know Iodine, Fluorine, Uranium, Silicon, and Sulfur, at a minimum.

In nursing school, I self-eval knocked off some points for not memorizing all of the lab ranges. My clinical instructors erased that and 1/

Same here. In my undergraduate, we were even allowed one-page of formula sheet that we brought in to the exam.

there are books, other nurses, and doctors on the floor who know the ranges. She was 100% correct, of course; you don't need to have half 3/

In my HS chem class every test included the table with 10 blank squares you had to fill it out perfectly or get no credit for the question.

that shit memorized. The things you should memorize are the weird ones you don't see frequently, like Beta Hydroxybuterate and shit. 4/4

Needless to say I have no real knowledge of elements. I would just always count on getting that question wrong.

Some basics need to be memorized or even a simple task would take forever if you need to check your phone for every tidbit of information

MadHakon . 2020-01-24 19:52:50
Yeah, I mean... we were memorizing it from a paper copy of the table. If you needed that information, why wouldn't you have that with you?

I never had to memorize stuff, we just learned how to read that from the table.

DisgruntledFerret . 2020-01-24 19:53:06
I mean, the periodic table also makes it a lot easier to memorize. And really, what else were you gonna use that memory for? Nothing good.

TeachingClayGuy . 2020-01-24 19:53:31
And by referencing it enough you will end up memorizing it.
